INDPENDENCE
After Hernan Cortes defeated the Aztecs and claimed the land for Spain, they ruled Mexico for 300 years. After that time, the people of Mexico demanded their indpendence from Spain. The revolt was led by Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest. He gave a speech in 1810 to rally the people. He died a year later, but fighting continued until freedom was won in 1821.
IMPORTANT PEOPLE

HERNAN CORTES
Cortes led the Spanish conquistadors to defeat the Aztecs in 1519. In 1521, he claimed the land for Spain.

MIGUEL HIDALGO
Hidalgo led the Mexican revolt to gain inpendence. He also gave a speech to the people in 1810.
